Fly fishing the Chilko River BC

The Lodge at Chilko Lake's main structure is remarkably situated on the shores of beautiful Chilko Lake at the outflow of the Chilko River. At 50 miles long, Chilko Lake is BC’s longest inland lake. Well over 1 million sockeye salmon return to the Chilko system to spawn every year making the Chilko run of sockeye the third largest in the Province. Needless to say, with from this prolific run of Pacific Salmon, the rainbow trout and char population benefit immensely. This can only mean one thing; really big wild resident fish!

Vaulted ceilings, gorgeous slate flooring, leather club chairs, comfy couches and tiffany lamps are commonplace. The lodge has an inviting deck, dining room, wireless Internet and a big screen television (if you must).  The upper level is a luxurious suite with impressive king bedroom, sitting area and grand bathroom complete with double headed showers.  The ground floor has a bar, games room and access to the popular fire pit area.

The surrounding cabins are stunning.  Carefully positioned for view and privacy, they are a mixture of one and two bedroom log and timber frame structures.  The cabins are unique but equally breathtaking featuring fine craftsmanship, comfortable furnishings and adorned with magnificent antiques and collectibles.  The units are self-contained and have comfortable living rooms, private bathrooms and kitchenettes.

Fly Fishing on the Chilko River
The Chilko River is what one might consider a controlled fishery. Anglers wishing to fish the Chilko must purchase a classified waters licence in addition to their regular fishing licence. In addition, angling on the Chilko River is restricted to fly fishing only! It is not uncommon to catch an abundance of rainbow trout, whitefish, and char all in the same day especially during the annual salmon migration and spawn.

The chinook salmon, the largest of the Pacific Salmons, migrate to spawning grounds in the system during the months of July and August making them readily available to fly anglers. While a 4 to 6 wt will do for the trout and char in the system, a 9 or 10 wt rod is a must for these powerful foes.

Tie flies in the evening that will be used the next day on the water and improve your casting skills with your Certified FFF Casting Instructor. Enjoy a true remote fly fishing experience only to be had in the high Chilcotin mountains of British Columbia. Cast your fly to rising rainbows and watch as they inhale your fly amidst some of the most spectacular scenery of the province. End your day, with great food and tales of the days adventures by the fire or in the hot tub. Come and enjoy the best fly fishing beautiful British Columbia has to offer. Other activities around the lodge include hiking, canoeing, swimming, bear viewing and photography.
